Made an AC meter for DIY Projects
Introduction
Starting of with a DIY project that is will be very useful in electronic projects that I will be making on here on igerry.com. I used the PZEM-022 AC meter module on this build to keep it simple. I’ve use Peacefair’s products in other electronic projects and I’ve found them satisfactory for an electronic hobbyist. The PZEM-022 is a versatile and reliable module that can measure various parameters of AC power, including voltage, current, power, and energy consumption.
Materials Needed
- PZEM-022 module
- Enclosure box
- Power cable with socket and plug
- Integrated power socket/switch/fuse
- Universal Power socket
- Fuse holder and fuse
- On/Off switch
- Binding posts
- Connecting wires
- Soldering iron and solder
- Screwdriver
- Drill
- Nibbler
Steps to Build the AC Meter
- Prepare the Enclosure Box:
- Drill holes in the enclosure box for the PZEM-022, power cable input, universal power socket output, fuse holder, on/off switch, and binding posts.
- Ensure that the holes are appropriately sized and positioned for easy access and visibility.
- Install the Components:
- Mount the PZEM-022 in the designated hole on the enclosure box.
- Secure the power cable through the hole and connect it to the PZEM-022 module.
- Install the fuse holder and fuse, ensuring it is connected in series with the power cable for protection.
- Attach the on/off switch to the enclosure and connect it to the power cable.
- Mount the binding posts on the enclosure and connect them to the PZEM-022 module for easy connection to the load.
- Wiring and Connections:
- Solder the connecting wires to the PZEM-022 module, ensuring proper connections for voltage, current, and power measurements.
- Double-check all connections to ensure they are secure and correct.
- Testing the AC Meter:
- Plug in the power cable and turn on the switch.
- Observe the display of the PZEM-022 to ensure it is functioning correctly and displaying the correct measurements.
- Connect a load to the binding posts and verify that the PZEM-022 module accurately measures the voltage, current, power, and energy consumption.
- Final Assembly:
- Once all components are tested and functioning correctly, secure the enclosure box with screws.
- Ensure that all wires are neatly arranged and insulated to prevent any short circuits.
What’s ahead
Building a DIY AC meter using the PZEM-022 module is a basic tool that I would be using in my projects. It will help me gather information about electrical information/consumption of my projects. The next build I will be doing is a DC meter.
